The Temple of Literature (Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam) is Vietnam's first national university, founded in 1070 to honor Confucius and educate Vietnam's elite. For over 700 years, it was the center of Vietnam's education system.
The 82 stone stelae standing on turtle backs list the names of doctoral graduates, now recognized as UNESCO Memory of the World. The complex features five courtyards with traditional Vietnamese architecture and peaceful gardens.
