Attractions—Bali—Tanah Lot Temple

Tanah Lot Temple

Bali's most photographed temple perched dramatically on a rock in the sea, spectacular at sunset with silhouettes against orange skies.

Religious Site★4.5

Tanah Lot is one of Bali's most iconic sea temples, perched dramatically on a rocky outcrop just offshore. The 16th-century Hindu temple is dedicated to the sea gods and is believed to guard Bali from evil sea spirits.

At high tide, the temple appears to float on the sea. At low tide, visitors can walk to the base of the rock. The site is most spectacular at sunset when the temple is silhouetted against brilliant orange skies.

Visitor Tips

  • 💡Arrive 1 hour before sunset for best photos
  • 💡Visit the holy snake cave at the base of the rock
  • 💡Crowds are huge at sunset - arrive early for good spots
